English & Theory of Knowledge
The 2020 - 2021 school year offered a unique challenge since hosting in-person tours was not allowed. Though first-hand experience is our preferred showcase, we worked hard to provide you with an alternative medium in the form of a three-dimensional (3-D) tour of our facilities. We are presenting each 3-D space with the corresponding class descriptions.

In addition, watch this video segment composed of
students' experiences in their English courses.

English Language & Composition

AP English Language & Composition is the required English class for Juniors, and it is the first of the two year IB English HL curriculum. In this class, students will explore English Literature through critical analysis of writing and literary elements. Students will study one poet in detail and analyze works from various backgrounds. Students will develop their IB writing journals and accumulate a knowledge base to be used on both the AP and IB exams. Junior year students will sit for the AP English Language & Composition exam, and complete their Internal Assessment (IA). The IA is an oral exam connecting works read during the year - an original English piece and a work in translation - to a common global issue.

Theory of Knowledge

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) aims to make students aware of the interpretative nature of knowledge, including personal ideological biases – whether these biases are retained, revised or rejected. The main goal of TOK is to answer the question: How do we know what we know? TOK is a two year course. The first year is taught by either Mr. Knight, Dr. Renfroe, or Mr. Yadon. The second year is taught by Mr. Heggood or Mr. Sharpe, depending on whether you take AP Microeconomics or AP Comparative Government, respectively. For the first half of your Junior year you will explore ideas like argument development and emotion. The second half of the year you work on your Extended Essay (EE) writing. The TOK course is assessed through an oral presentation and a 1,600 word essay (completed your Senior year). The presentation assesses the ability of the student to apply TOK thinking to a real-life situation, while the essay prompt begins with a specified concept.

English Literature

AP/IB Literature is Senior level English. IB students are required to take both an AP and IB exam Senior year because you are learning both AP and IB curriculum. Literature is automatically designated as an HL course. The summer before your senior year, you have two summer reading books: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. The IB exam will consist of a World Literature paper your write based on two texts: one translated into English, and another in its original language. The paper will discuss an issue that is apparent in both pieces of literature. There are two Literature teachers for IB students -- Mrs. Donoher and Mrs. Johns -- both of whom have decades of experience and a devotion to the craft.
